The Beerless Worker

Edward S. Sorenson

“The liquor traffic is responsible for
nine-tenths of the misery amongst the
working classes.” —Daily paper.

                 *    *    *    *

What about our fellow workers
Who have shunned the good Rhine wine?
Do they dwell in peace and comfort?
     Are they happy, brothers mine?

Are their lives nine-tenths the brighter?
     Is existence one long song?
March they never with the workless?
Are they always hale and strong?

Know they not that anxious feeling
     When behind-hand with the rent?
Have they always cash to jingle
Though the week be all but spent?

Alas! my fellow toilers,
Though you vote old Bacchus dead,
Your final goal towards freedom
     Lies just as far ahead.
